Vandalia baseball coach Luke Hohlt said on Thursday that the Vandals can win a regional championship this season.

“I think there is a good possibility of someone looking past us,” he said. “We aren’t looking past anyone … and I think if we play good baseball, there is no doubt we can win a regional.”

The Vandals will enter the regional on Monday with a sub-.500 record, and they have been defeated by each team in the regional – except Staunton, which Vandalia hasn’t played. Hohlt said that because the Vandals are better than their record indicates, that could improve their chances.

The Vandals’ starting pitching has been very good this season, but numerous errors have led to several Vandalia losses.

If the defense can corral more grounders and fly balls during the regional tournament, Vandalia could upset some teams, Hohlt said.

“I want to see more of the same that we saw this week (two wins and one loss), minus some errors,” Hohlt said. “I want to see us still driving the ball.”

The Vandals (5) open the regional tournament at Litchfield (4) on Monday at 4:30 p.m.
