ROBINSON -- Two St. Elmo athletes on Friday advanced to the girls state meet next weekend.

Senior Abby Hill and her younger sister, freshman Molly Hill, placed first and second in the discus throw at the Class A sectional meet at Robinson on Friday.

The elder sister threw 108 feet, 2 inches to win the event, while also meeting the state's automatic qualifying standard of 107 feet.

Molly, who said she had hoped to throw 107 feet, easily finished second, with a toss of 102 feet, 2 inches. The third-place finisher had a throw of 99 feet, 10 1/2 inches.

The state meet begins on Thursday at Charleston, and both sisters have set a goal of reaching the finals.

For Vandalia, sophomore Sierah Ruffner just missed the 5 foot, 2 inch qualfying standard in high jump.

She placed fifth after clearing 5 feet, but on her final attempt at 5-2, Ruffner grazed the bar with her legs by mere inches.

Full stories on the Hill sisters, the Vandalia performances and the first season of girls track at Patoka will be in Thursday's edition of The Leader-Union.

In addition, a large photo gallery, including sectional photos from all three schools, will be posted on www.leaderunion.com next week.
