St. Elmo softball team ends season in regional semifinals

The St. Elmo High School softball team ended a successful season with an 8-4 loss to Windsor in the semifinals of the regional tournament last Wednesday.

The Lady Eagles held an early lead, after scoring four times in the first two innings, while holding Windsor scoreless.

But the Lady Devils evened the game by the fourth inning and used a four-run sixth inning to make the final margin.

"We played hard and got beat by a pretty darn good team," said coach Tom Fedrigon. "There is no shame in that."

St. Elmo ended the season with a 19-16 record and will lose three seniors – Brooke Maxey, Morgan Myers and Courtney Calhoun.

Sophomore Savannah Feezel paced the offense, with a 2-for-3 effort. Maxey scored twice and had an RBI.

Samantha Austin, a sophomore who pitched most of the innings the past month because of an injury to Myers, struck out 10 batters during the game. She allowed 11 hits, but Fedrigon said only three were hard-hit balls.

"She has turned herself into one of the top pitchers in the National Trail Conference and the Egyptian-Illini Conference," Fedrigon said.
