HCE holds annual meeting

Thirty-one members representing the seven units – Bingham/Ramsey, Sefton, St. Elmo, St. Peter, Vandalia Day, Wheatland and Wright’s Corner – attended the 64th annual meeting of the Fayette County Association for Home and Community Education (HCE). The event was held Tuesday, June 12, in the Holy Cross Lutheran Church fellowship hall in Vandalia.

Also present was Marilyn Schaefer, District 6 director, who officiated the installation of officers.
The club president, Flo Allen, gave the welcome and led in the pledge of allegiance to the flag. Allen led the members in reading the club’s “Aim for the Homemaker.” Mary Smith asked the blessing for the potluck meal.
The tables were decorated with many different styles of teapots, each with a floral accent and figurines or objects in keeping with the individual teapots.
Also, in keeping with Flag Day, a small American flag anchored in a marshmallow was at each place setting. The St. Elmo Unit, represented by Anna Jean Rhodes, gave a report of attendance.
The Fayette County co-second vice president, Joyce Moore, led the memorial service for members who died during the past year. Sandra Runge of the St. Peter Unit honored the memory of the late Hermine Grandt. Evelyn Probst of the Bingham/Ramsey Unit honored Geraldine Casey.
Secretary Mary Smith reported the June 2011 annual meeting minutes. Dorothy Harpster, treasurer, gave the treasurer’s report for April 20, 2011, through March 2012. Anita Smith reported on the audit committee.
Harpster presented the 2012-13 budget and Allen asked for a vote on the budget, which passed. The Fayette County HCE Board reports were as follows: first vice chairman, Phyllis Pryor (on programs); co-second vice chairmen, Joyce Moore/Anna Jean Rhodes (membership); community outreach-Anita Smith; family issues-Debbie Segrest (replaced Irene Reed, who resigned due to health issues); international-Shirley Klitzing; and public relations-Panzi Blackwell.
Allen gave the nominations report and officiated at the election of the 2012-13 officers. Schaefer, officiated at the installation of officers, presenting a flower to each officer with a brief description of the meaning of the flower and a reminder of the duties and expectations of each officer.
Schaefer encouraged the officers to show the community how well-tended to detail their activities are and each “to do your duties to the best of  your ability.”
Rhodes presented the following awards: Homemaker of the Year- Anita Smith; and Unit of the Year-Co-winners-Wright’s Corner and Sefton Unit.
Also on the program: Rhodes recognized charter members Vontella McEndollar of Wheatland Unit, Martha O’Dell of St. Peter and Ilene Sidwell of Sefton; and new members: Sefton-Connie Bingaman, Ginny Wilbur and Betty Miller; St. Elmo-Joyce Drees, Mary Myers; St. Peter-Jan Mendonca; and Vandalia Day-Lura Tarter.
Also recognized were: longest record of perfect attendance-Irene Reed of Wright’s Corner, with 18 years. Dorothy Harpster and Flo Allen of Sefton Unit and Anita Smith of Vandalia Day each have 16 years perfect attendance.
Rhodes announced that changes in membership and dues are needed  by the end of June..
Mary Smith announced that some “Little Dresses” had been delivered to the destination personally by a friend. Shirley Klitzing announced this year’s International Country is Trinidad.
Schaefer commented that she was pleased by the addition of seven new members to the Fayette County HCE. She also reminded all of the workshop that will be on Aug. 23 at Mt. Vernon.
