Vandalia graduate Kyle Hawkins has been a very effective pitcher for the Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville club baseball team this spring.

In his last four games, he has pitched 18 1/3 innings, striking out 28 batters.

Included in those starts were a complete game in a 7-1 win against SIU-Carbondale on Sunday, and a four-hitter against St. Louis University last Tuesday.

Against SIUC, Hawkins struck out eight, walked one and allowed just five hits to keep SIUE undefeated in conference play, at 8-0.

Against SLU, Hawkins struck out 10 in five innings of work, while walking one in the 11-1 victory.

Combined for the fall and spring, Hawkins has struck out 64 batters in 47 1/3 innings, while walking just 11 and holding an earned-run average of 1.90. His record is 7-2.

Offensively, he is 2-for-5, with a home run, four RBI and two runs.

SIUE is back in action the weekend of April 27 against the University of Illinois.

Depending on the outcome of the series between SIUC and Illinois, SIUE could clinch a playoff spot with wins against Illinois.
