Greenville holds on to top Vandals in VHT

VANDALIA – Greenville scored on its last four possessions of last Saturday’s game to maintain its slim lead and beat the Vandals in the final game of pool play for both teams.

Eight Comets scored in the game, with Devon Leitschuh’s 12 points and eight rebounds leading the way in the 47-43 victory.
There were 11 lead changes in the game, the last one coming with 2:58 left in the game, with the Comets taking a 39-38 lead.
The Vandals cut down the lead to one possession several times over the last three minutes, but never could get back on top, despite scoring on three of its last five possessions.
Senior Colton Woolsey had a double-double for the Vandals, scoring 14 points and grabbing 13 rebounds.
He added three assists, two blocks and a steal, and junior Collin Nestleroad added 14 points.
Vandalia trailed for much of the first half, overtaking the lead on a basket by Nestleroad with 6:34 left in the third quarter.
That lead grew to seven points after two free throws by Woolsey 1:58 later. That ended a 7-0 run for the Vandals.
Greenville retook the lead on a 3-pointer by Will Schaufelberger with 7:42 left in the game, and the teams traded the lead four more times before the Comets took it for good.

For the first time in the Vandalia Holiday Tournament, the Pana Panthers were slowed down.
At the same time, top-seeded Flora advanced to the title game, with hopes of winning its third title in the past five years.
In a rematch of the final game of pool play from last season, Flora got the best of Pana this time around, taking down the uptempo Panthers, 67-50, last Saturday.
Bryce Pearce continued his dominating tournament, scoring 27 points, and Ethan Leib added a double-double, with 15 points and 13 rebounds.
The Wolves, who finished pool play undefeated, took an early lead on Pana, and then held the Panthers to just five points in the third quarter to take a lead and cruise to victory.
Pana was led by Kyle Gibson’s 25 points and seven rebounds. He was the only Panther to score in double figures.

After finishing ninth last season in its Vandalia Holiday Tournament debut, St. Anthony advanced to the championship game.
The Bulldogs held Altamont to just 17 points in the first half, getting outscored by the Bulldogs by 16 points in those two quarter to set up their 64-52 victory.
John Goeckner scored 18 points to lead the Bulldogs, and Alex Hoelscher had a double-double, with 13 rebounds and 11 points.
Altamont was led by Derek Jahraus, who had 10 points and eight rebounds.

Maroa-Forsyth picked up its first win in pool play last Saturday, taking down South Central, 56-36.
Jacob Murphy put in 16 points for the Trojans, and Josh Ratts added 14 points and seven rebounds.
For South Central, sophomore Brett Harmeier scored 16 points, and senior Tyler Ross had a game-high eight rebounds.

Greenville picked up its first win in the Vandalia Holiday Tournament, knocking off Shelbyville, 57-44.
Will Schaufelberger scored 14 points to lead four Comets in double figures, with Austin Lawrence adding 12 and Devon Leitschuh scoring 10.
The game was tied after the first quarter, and Greenville took a one-point deficit to halftime. That was turned into a three-point lead after the third period.
But the Comets outscored the Rams, 14-4, in the final eight minutes to take control of the game and earn the victory.
Cwenton Williams had 11 points for Shelbyville.

VANDALIA – Sophomore Malachi Maxey hit all seven of his 3-pointers in the first half to help St. Elmo/Brownstown to a big halftime lead during a 67-50 win against South Central.
The Eagles made 12-of-22 3-pointers in the game, with senior Jacob Behrends making all three of his attempts and senior Levi Maxey adding two.
All three of them scored in double figures, with Malachi Maxey’s career-high 21 points leading the way. Behrends had 15, Levi Maxey had 13 and freshman Landon Feezel added 10.
SEB turned over the ball just seven times in the game, with three of those coming late in the fourth quarter. The Eagles scored 16 of their points off of 21 South Central miscues.
Levi Maxey had seven steals, and the Eagles had 12 in the game.
South Central was led by sophomore Brett Harmeier’s 15 points, and sophomore Chase Riley had 10 points. Junior Evan Langley had nine rebounds and seven points.
