Freshman Curtis Gordon has had a strong start to his high school pole vaulting career.

He recently set a new school record by clearing 14 feet at an indoor meet in Carbondale, and his vault of 13 feet at last Saturday’s Charleston Indoor earned him a spot in this weekend’s Illinois Top Times Meet, the unofficial indoor state meet.

The Vandals finished 32nd of 35 teams at the Charleston meet.

Both the boys and girls were scheduled to travel to Litchfield for the outdoor season-opener, but that was canceled due to the cold weather.

The next meet on the schedule is next Tuesday at Hillsboro.
