Good weather, moisture launch harvest activities across Illinois

Cooler conditions continued over much of the state last week.
With small amounts of precipitation across the state, many farmers were able to take full advantage of the favorable weather.
Many producers are either harvesting or preparing for harvest.
Other farming activities include fall tillage and planting winter wheat.
There were 5.8 days suitable for fieldwork last week.
The corn crop has now reached 79 percent mature, and harvest activity picked up steadily last week, with 18 percent of the crop now harvested, compared to only 7 percent last week.
Soybeans that have turned yellow reached 73 percent, with 42 percent shedding leaves.
The sorghum harvest has also increased, now up to 15 percent.
Topsoil moisture was rated 10 percent very short, 23 percent short, 60 percent adequate and 7 percent surplus.
Temperatures statewide averaged 66.5 degrees, which is 3.2 degrees below normal.
Precipitation averaged .88 inches, .18 inches above normal.
