It’s the time of year when all the preparation and all the hard work come together to give our local high school athletes a shot at post-season glory.
They’ve endured the conditioning. They’ve mastered the drills of their sport. And they’ve pulled together as a team to give it their best shot.
Now is payoff time.
The Vandal basketball team played its first postseason contest Wednesday night, battling Hillsboro in the opening round of the Hillsboro Regional. The winner will live to play another day – specifically, this Saturday in the regional championship game.
Four Vandal wrestlers went to the individual state competition last week, but they all ran into tough competition and were eliminated in the early rounds. Representing the Vandals were Tyler Dagen, Chaston Womack, Dalton Blankenship and Zach Jackson.
The wrestlers will get another try at some state hardware as they head to Bloomington for this weekend’s dual team state tournament. The squad scored a blowout 59-6 victory over Murphysboro on Tuesday in the Robinson Sectional. They face Litchfield in the state quarterfinals on Saturday.
On the basketball side, both South Central and St. Elmo won first-round regional games. They both advanced to play Wednesday night.

We applaud the efforts of these area athletes. And we wish them good luck as they pursue their post-season dreams.
