Getting that honor, however, turned out to be quite a challenge for the duo.

Facing the team of Gianna Paden and Breanna Speraneo from Hillsboro after a first-round bye, George and Hickerson had to take the match to three games before closing out the 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 second-round victory.

Included was winning the final three points of the third game.

The third game started at 3-3 by rule, and Hickerson and George won the first point to move ahead, 4-3, but Hillsboro rallied back to take the next two points.

Holding match-point at 5-4, Hillsboro was unable to gain a lead in the next game, and Hickerson smashed a ball close to the net to close out the game and tie the set at 5-5.

The teams were tied at 15 and 30 in the next game, but the Lady Vandals were able to close out and earn a match-point of their own at 6-5.

A double fault from Hillsboro opened up a 30-0 lead for Vandalia, but the Lady Toppers would come back to tie the game at 30.

Hickerson had another hit at the net to put Vandalia back ahead, and after Hillsboro tied the game at 40, Vandalia won the deuce serve to take the match.

In the semifinals, the duo lost to Rachel Sponsler and Katie Pollman of Greenville, 3-6, 0-6, but in the third-place match, Hickerson and George defeated Roxana's Jane Pratt and Josie Mossinelli, 8-4.

The two wins at the conference tournament give Hickerson and George nine on the season.
