The Freight of Vandalia came out of retirement and showed little rust in placing third at the Illinois Amateur Softball Association wooden bat state fast-pitch softball tournament this past weekend.
Vandalia opened the tournament, which was held in Casey, last Friday night, with a loss to eventual runners-up, the Belleville Stallions.
But from there, the Freight went on a streak none of them likely imagined.
In the first game on Saturday morning, Vandalia beat Altamont, advancing to a game at 3 p.m.
In that game, the Freight beat Teutopolis Donnewald Distributing, and immediately battled Bowen Ramsey Financial, also winning that game.
Vandalia then made it back-to-back-to-back wins without a break by beating Teutopolis Weesels.
In the loser's bracket semifinal, the Freight defeated Teutopolis Miller Lite, but in the loser's bracket final, Vandalia was again defeated by Belleville.
Local players listed on the Frieght's roster for the tournament were: Rich Well, Brian Buscher, Luke Hohlt, Bryan Hobbie, Nick Casey, Dave Scott, Tim Summers and Jon Lotz.
