For the past year, Guaranteed Air Freight has had time to think about the last year's Fourth of July Tournament in Altamont, where they were blanked in the championship, 7-0, by Cerro Gordo.  This weekend, they will get another shot at the title.

The Freight is coming off a fourth-place finish at the Kelso Klassic. .

Friday night, Vandalia will play its first game of the tournament, against T-Town KC at 7:30 p.m. on field A.

Should Vandalia win, it will play Saturday at 11:30 a.m. against the winner of the Franny’s vs. Kull’s game.

Should the Freight lose its opening-round game to T-Town, it will play Saturday at 1 p.m. against the loser of the Franny’s vs. Kull’s game.

The tournament is a double-elimination format, with the championship being Sunday at 5 p.m.

The Freight will play anywhere between two and eight games between Friday and Sunday.

The tournament starts on Thursday night and will feature 15 teams.

Two weeks ago, at the Kelso Klassic, Vandalia played Franny’s, who at the time was a composite of two teams, Franny’s and Bud Light. The Freight lost 9-2, its only two runs coming on a bases-loaded single and a bases-loaded walk in the fourth inning. They had just five hits in the loss.

Vandalia’s pitching has proven to be a strong point for the team this season. Behind the arm of Brad Sturdy, the Freight is 2-0. He has struck out 12 in 14 innings on the mound and has yet to give up a run.

Although Alan Meinhart is 0-2, he has struck out 17. He has given up nine runs, all of which were in one start. In his other start, he gave up just one unearned run on three hits.

Both of the Freight's wins have come by way of shutouts. In its first win, they scored just two runs, while in the second they scored three. They were only shut out once, a 1-0 loss to Black and Gold at the Kelso Klassic.

At last year's tournament, the Freight won its first-round game but lost its second and had to battle back through the loser's bracket. They defeated, this year's opening-round opponent T-Town KC, 8-1, in the first round of the loser bracket.
