Republicans now have four choices when picking a sheriff candidate next spring.
Almost a week after Sheriff Aaron Lay decided he would not seek a third term, dropping the number of candidates to two, two others candidates entered the race.
On the final day of filing for the spring primary, Brent Ellis and Brad Ledbetter joined Bruce Bowen and Chris Smith as Republican sheriff candidates.
On Tuesday, in a lottery held in the office of Fayette County Clerk and Recorder Terri Braun, Bowen won the top ballot spot for the primary. The lottery was needed because Bowen and Smith filed their petitions at the same time.
In a second lottery, for Republican county clerk candidates Vicky Conder and Barb Schaal, Conder won the top ballot spot.
A complete listing of filings for the spring primary will be in this week's issue.
