Fire damages Woodyard home

A Woodyard home sustained significant damage from a fire last Friday morning.

Vandalias volunteer firefighters were called to the home of the Donnie Ellis family at 9:48 a.m.

Upon their arrival within seven minutes, firefighters found flames shooting from the roofline of the home.

The fire was contained to the kitchen and living room areas, but fire officials estimated the damage at $90,000.

No injuries were sustained as a result of the blaze.

The cause of the fire is unknown, but Vandalia fire officials were able to determine that it started in the kitchen area.

Sixteen firefighters responded to the call, including members of the Brownstown Fire Department, who provided mutual aid assistance. They were at the scene for about 80 minutes.

The VVFD was also called out shortly before 8:30 p.m. on Friday for a report of a fire at a residence southeast of Woodyard.

The report was unfounded, and no action was required by the firefighters.

Fifteen firefighters responded to that Friday evening call.
