Though this years Fayette County Relay For Life hasnt yet reached its aggressive goal, co-chair Anita Gottman said she is pretty happy about our progress.
By midnight Saturday, about halfway through the 12-hour overnight event, she said the effort had raised $56,671 and money is still being turned in, she said Monday. This years goal was $70,000.
Hopefully, were in reach of our goal, said Gottman, who teamed with co-chair Vickie Miller to organize this years relay.
Gottman noted that teams are still turning in their pledges and donations.
Also, a softball challenge between area businesses and fire and police personnel had to be postponed because of wet fields. That event will be held later this month, and should generate additional funds, she said.
Under the theme of Celebrate, Remember and Fight Back, this years relay event included 18 teams, along with several sponsoring businesses and many individual donors.
Winners of three raffle prizes were: Mark Ponzel (overnight stay at Pierre Marquette Lodge), Sheryl Duncan (dinner and show at Firefly Grill and Rosebud Theater) and Kay Brandt (certificates to several area restaurants).
The event also included musical performances by the Layne Mayfield Band, Pete Sutherland and Ed Taylor. Speaking during the evening were Mayor Rick Gottman, Kayla Black, Dave Rickman and cancer physician Dr. Philip Dy.
A luminaria ceremony was held at 9 p.m. Closing ceremonies were held at 5 a.m.
