McDowell competes in auctioneer contest
Andrew McDowell of Vandalia, competed in the World Livestock Auctioneer Contest last Friday in Montgomery, Ala.
The contest is an annual event sponsored by the Livestock Marketing Association (LMA), in conjunction with its annual meeting and is held at various markets throughout the U.S. and Canada.
McDowell is sponsored by Greenville Livestock Auction, which is Illinois’ largest livestock auction market. Owned by J.R. Hugo, and Travis and Shaina Diekemper, it is a second-generation, family owned business.
McDowell is one of 33 auctioneers from the U.S. and Canada to qualify to go to the finals.
Auctioneers must place in the top 10 at one of the three regional contests, which Andrew did at Bristow, Okla., along with the international champion receiving a bye into the contest making 31 entries. McDowell has been reserve champion twice at the International contest, which is held as part of the Calgary Stampede in Calgary, Alberta, Canada and will be competing there again this year on July 12-13.
The contest is open for viewing to the public with all the contestants
selling in the opening round with the top ten finalist competing in a final
go.  All the contestants have an interview round on Friday before a panel
of media judges as the Champion is spokesman for and represents LMA in the
upcoming year at many events and functions.

FSA county committee nominations open
Nominations are now open for farmers to serve on the Farm Service Agency county committees.

This year, eligible people may nominate candidates for a three-year term in the local administrative area, which consists of Shafter, Sharon, Sefton, Bear Grove, Vandalia, Otego and Wheatland townships. People who reside in one of these townships and are eligible may be nominated to run.
The county committee nomination period began on Monday and runs through Aug. 1.
The nomination form is available at USDA Service Centers and online at www.fsa.usda.gov or at the Fayette County FSA office, 301 S. Third St., Vandalia. For more information, contact the Fayette County FSA office in Vandalia at 283-2311.
