The Family Y of Fayette County plans to build a community recreation center in Vandalia – and they’d like to tell you more about it.
To accomplish that, two public meetings will be held next Monday, Feb. 23, in the Little Theater of Vandalia Elementary School – one at 5:30 p.m. and one at 7 p.m.
“The purpose of these meetings,” said Family Y Executive Director John Ashdown, “is to let the public know what our plans are.
"We want to field their questions and consider their recommendations. We also will share with those who attend how they can support our project as donors or fund-raising team members.”
More than half of the funds for the $2 million building have already been raised, thanks to a $1 million grant awarded by the Old Capital Foundation.
The foundation also has pledged $500,000 for an endowment fund to help with operational expenses once the building is constructed.
The center will be built on the Kaskaskia College campus, near the intersection of Fillmore Street and Rock Island Avenue in Vandalia. The YMCA has entered into a no-cost, 99-year lease with Kaskaskia College on about five acres of its 40-acre campus for the project. The value of that land is approximately $85,000.
