Evergreen Outreach-Oct. 20, 2011

By Joyce Mueller
October, the transition month, heralds many special things and events.
Pumpkins have appeared; apples are in abundance; leaves are flying in a downward dance; Halloween is approaching; and, of course, the World Series games are in full force.
It is a wonderful time to enjoy the activities of Evergreen Outreach, and you would discover that you are having a great time each Monday afternoon.
This week’s program began with beautiful music by Bernie Ray. It was great to see her back at the piano (just like old times).
Leader Beverly Hood continued the program as everyone joined her in singing the “EO" and "Welcome” songs.
She and the Rev. Jim Fackler also led in the singing of "Happy Birthday" in honor of Roger Berry, Joe Leidner, David Pence and Jamie Ramo.
We welcomed a first-time guest from FAYCO, Angela Antrim.
The Rev. Scott Smith from the First Church of God presented the devotional. He selected scripture taken from Ephesians 4:26-27. “In your anger, do not sin; do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold.”
If there are hurt feelings, go to that person and ask him for forgiveness.
Smith continued, saying, “When you find the formula, you can take encouragement.” He then closed with prayer.
Turning to the stage, Beverly introduced Randy Schukar, Judy Varga and her 7-year-old granddaughter, Madilyn Upchurch. They had recently visited Disney World, and Madilyn was still excited.
Madilyn chose “One More Song About Jesus,” and Judy followed with “Locomotion.” Erna Wasmuth led the “train” throughout the room and then led the dances with the ever-popular “Chicken Dance.”
Randy selected “Ring of Fire,” “Elvira” and “The Gambler.” Judy and Beverly became a duo, singing, “Rocky Top.” Madilyn sang “I’m In The Lord’s Army” and Judy closed with “Crazy,” “Harper Valley PTA” and “Coal Miner's Daughter.”
In the pinochle corner, Rosamund Hobler and Peggy Lippold tied 2-2 with Flo Lange and John Hunsley. At table two, Shirley Locke and Jeanne Schlicht tied 1-1, with Mary Woolsey and Louise Kruenegel.
Scheduled next week are Cindy Hunter, leader; Dr. Rev. Roger Grimmett, scripture; Mary Woolsey writer; and special entertainment will be presented by David and Patricia Pence (the SoftFire duo) and their border collies.
A final note: Take time to see the beauty of this season. I quote Albert Camus – “Autumn is a second spring when every leaf if a flower.”
CARPE DIEM (seize the day). Go Cardinals!
