Evergreen Outreach Dec. 15, 2011

By Mary Woolsey
Ho! Ho! Ho! Are you ready for Christmas? Do you have your shopping done? Is the house decorated. Are the cards sent? Are you so busy that you sometimes forget the reason for Christmas? God sent his son, Jesus, or there would not be a reason for Christmas.
It was wonderful seeing Donna Smith at the piano again, playing some of her many songs. Donna had lost her dear husband, Gail, recently, so it was good to see her back at Evergreen Outreach.
Cookies were donated by the United Methodist Women and drinks were served.
The Rev. Jim Fackler was our leader today. He said that he enjoyed coming to EO when Randy Schukar was there, because Randy told so many jokes. Of course, Fackler is a pro at telling jokes. One of my favorites of his today was: A mother dog gave birth beside a road and a cop came by and gave her a ticket for "littering."
The “Outreach" and "Welcome” songs were sung.
Fackler recognized the December birthdays of: Kathy Wright, Randy Dothager and Lori Adams. The group sang “Happy Birthday.”
Fackler took his devotional from Psalm 119:105. “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”
He said coming from Greenville a few nights ago, darkness was all around – even the highway was dark. But a big hole was in the darkness, a full moon.
God sent his son to put a big hole in our darkness. Our darkness could be anger, sadness or many other dark moments that we have. God can pierce the darkness. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world.”
Fackler took some children to Merimac Park. They had to carry a flashlight to find their way. He turned the flashlight off, and you could not see your hand in front of your face. The children became scared. Fackler lit a candle, and Tricia, a small girl, led them out of the cave. That is the way of Jesus, a light unto your path.
Judy Varga sang a beautiful Christmas song, “Without Jesus There Would Be No Christmas,” followed with “His Name Is Wonderful” and “Something About That Name.”
Randy Schukar sang, “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” Randy added the reindeer ears to his head. When “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town” was sung, Santa came in, dressed in a red suit and white whiskers.
Santa carried a big sack of candy canes, which he gave to each of us.
A large orange was given to us, compliments of Dee and Grace Walton. Thank you so much for the special treat!
Judy sang while on Santa’s lap, and told Santa that a diamond ring and a new car would be just fine.
Songs about Christmas continued to be sung by Judy and Randy. It was a big reminder of the season. Thanks to the Varga family, Judy, Santa Bob and Randy, for giving us a pleasant afternoon.
Pinochle was played at two tables. Flo Lange and John Hunsley won one game, while Richard Kruenegel and Shirley Locke won three. At table two, Rosamund Hobler and Peggy Lippold won three games to Ruth Ann Scott and Wolf Schlicht’s none.
The Heartland Honeys will be at Wesley Hall next Monday. The Rev. Joseph Havrilka will present the scripture. Bev Hood will be the leader, Pat Rhodes the writer and Sandy Dothager will be at the piano.
Come on out for a good time at Wesley Hall at First United Methodist Church.
