Evergreen Outreach
By Charlene M. Jett
What a joyous meeting we had! If you ever need an uplift, a friend, a real joyful occasion, just come to Evergreen Outreach. For at least an hour, maybe more, you can cast your troubles away and let God fill your heart. Great music and good friends will help you get thru whatever or anything that is hurting you. We welcomed many EO friends that we have not seen for at least a month, some since Christmas!
The success on Monday started with singing “Happy Birthday” to four EO friends.
The Rev. Joe Lawson stepped up to provide us with a very brief sermon about creation. He told that Jesus was at the creation when God spoke the universe into being. Did you get that – God spoke the entire universe into being with His Word.
The Holy Spirit was also present, and with God and Jesus, they represent the Trinity, on which our faith is based. So, from where I sit, God said “Big Bang”, and that’s is what started the whole deal!
Rev. Lawson told us how important it is to believe in Jesus and to never leave the church. He referenced John 3:16, where God gave his only son Jesus to die for our sins, and that whosoever believes in him will have everlasting (eternal) life.
Phyllis Rames read to us her favorite passage of scripture, Mathew 25:40, which is the foundation of Evergreen Outreach.
For our entertainment, Judy Varga and Randy Schukar got the lights up, the microphone on and the action started! Judy always starts with a serious solo, and this time she chose “I’ll Pray for You, and You Pray for Me.” Then, with her energy abounding, she rousted all of us “ little chickens” into dancing formation, and let us cut loose! You would have thought we were geese with all the gaggling and giggling.
She followed that with our “Locomotion” dance, which Randy always leads. We must have made four or five circles around Wesley Hall, hooting, tooting, whistling, shouting and jumping! Some train ride! None better in town!
Randy soloed on two of his favorites, “ Ring of Fire” and “Gambler,” which brought him calls from the crowd for an encore! Judy decided it was time for Brad Elmore to get some dancing in, so she sang his favorite song, “Coal Miner’s Daughter.”
Now the dance floor was warmed up and Randy turned up the volume for “Elvirva.” You really should have seen this – this is a hip-grinding, bottom-shaking number that is best done by Brenda, who had to work! So we had several unlikely substitutes up front, who had a great time trying to do the “Elvira” grind. I thought the ceiling tiles might fall down!
Not to be out done, Judy played a very mischievous foil in Randy’s attempt to sing “ Hey, Good Looking” straight! She can turn her sweet, loving voice in to a screeching witch-like “Yes” that will make the hair on the back of your neck stand out! She can be a most sinister sister and is a heap more trouble than Randy can handle, so somebody help him!
The chaos was not controllable, so Randy had to sing “Heartaches by the Number” to put Judy in her place!
My tracking the songs deteriorated the more dancing continued. So, by now, I’m totally out of the loop. There were at least three to five dancing groups made up of two to six people each, so I sat and rested for “Okie from Muskogee.” I wasn’t about to try and be the woman in “You Ain’t Woman enough to take my Man.” I dare say Debbie and Jeanne, however, ran the bidding for Bob up to two cents! While all this silliness was going on, Dolly Rames was playing with Debbie and her grandson – what a delightful sight! We ran out of time and Judy signed off with “Tennessee Waltz” – my favorite!
The pinochle table was humming. Mary and Shirley skinned Richard and Susan, three games to zip! I think you need to check the cards – Mary may have made a side trip to Vegas!
No more Evergreen Outreach meeting till the first Monday in May. Hope to see you all then, so make the best of your spring and enjoy God’s beautiful creations!
