Evergreen Outreach

By Joyce Mueller
An enjoyable hour is always reserved for everyone attending Evergreen Outreach each Monday. To many, it is the highlight of their week.
There was a capacity crowd on hand this week, awaiting special entertainment presented by David and Patricia Pence (the SoftFire duo from Hillsboro). They always have outstanding selections and p;ay a wide variety of instruments.
After leaving our program, they went to Greenville to “sit in” with a Greenville College group in the afternoon, and then participate in the Greenville High School production of “Hello Dolly” later in the day. This Monday, they were “escorted” by border collies “Rufus,” “Matthew” and Phoebe, also crowd-pleasers.
Volunteers served refreshments of cookies (provided by the  Brownstown ladies), iced tea and coffee.
Leader Cindy Hunter recognized this week’s E.O. birthday honorees: Edna Penney, Eddie George, Toyna Robension and Jennifer Kistler. We also learned that Cindy’s grandson, Max, is now turning 12.
Hunter then introduced the Rev. Tom Farris, who presented a  devotional on “Forgiveness.” His main points were:
• You will have uneasy feelings;
• Know that God will bless you for doing the right thing;
• Learn that this will teach “little people” to become “big people” – to forgive;
• Relationships can survive, and set both sides free.
He closed with a prayer: "Help us to be obedient to you, and to love one another.”
On stage, the SoftFire duo continued with selections that included: “Joy, Joy, Joy,” “Jericho,” "I Shall Not Be Blue,” “He Has Made Me Glad” and “Our God is an Awesome God.”
Pinochle players Rosamund Hobler and Mary Woolsey bested Shirley Locke and Susan Meador by the score of 2-0.
Finally, I'd like to acknowledge the remarkable longevity of Evergreen Outreach in Vandalia, now in its 34th year. That has been helped by the availability of free transportation for those attending via the Operation Outing bus.
Scheduled for next week's EO meeting are: Beulah Brown, leader; the Rev. Joe Lawson, scripture; Betty Stolte, piano; Charlene M. Jett, writer; and special entertainment.
Carpe Diem (seize the day)!
