Evergreen Outreach

By Joyce Mueller
The recent changes Mother Nature provided for us this last week can probably be remembered for some time. But we are still in the month of the Emerald – the rich green birthstone that depicts the landscape of colorful flowers and trees. This time of year also brings special occasions, which includes: graduation, weddings and community activities.

Leading in our activities on Monday was pianist Bette Stolte, who presented a variety of songs, from inspirational (such as "Wonderful Words of Love"), to patriotic (such as "God Bless America") to upbeat standards.
This week, we had seven birthday honorees: Shirley Brown, Gladys Meador, Mickie Wilson, Mary Gebke, Paul Koeberlein, Ewald Steiner and Virginia Wolf. Beulah Brown and Marie Sutton led the group in "Happy Birthday.”
We were pleased to welcome back the Rev. Tom Farris, pastor of First Church of God. In using the word “why,” he chose phrases such as: “Why does the sun lighten your hair but darken your skin?” “Why is abbreviation a long word?” “Why am I the way I am?” “Why do I do the things I do?” And, most importantly, “Why does God love us?”
Farris referred to Isaiah 45:5-6, “Lord, you have assigned me my portion and my cup; you have made my lot secure. The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance.”
He closed by saying, “We thank you, Lord, for being the loving God that you are.”
Brown continued the program by asking, “What is the first thing you do when you go to work?” She received a variety of answers – such as “ride the bus” and “smile and say 'Good morning.'”
After a round of “group singing,” Brown introduced Ron File, who sang an amusing song: “The Chocolate Ice Cream Cone.” He received a big round of applause.
In the pinochle corner, Richard Kruenegel and Ruth Ann Sealt bested Mary Woolsey and Edith Elliott, 2-0.
A final note: With the approach of Memorial Day, we can begin to reflect on the sacrifices of those who gave their lives for our freedom and America’s honor. We also extend our gratitude to those now serving.
Remember, because of the observation of Memorial Day, there will be no Evergreen Outreach next week. We will meet again on June 2.
Carpe Diem! (Seize the day)

Beulah Brown and Marie Sutton led the singing at Monday’s Evergreen Outreach meeting.
