Evergreen Outreach

By Charlene M. Jett
It was a great warm summer day for our meeting, and we made the most of it. We missed FAYCO!
Our leader was Cindy Hunter, who told us about her recent “dog accident,” where her HUGE dog bit her golden retriever.  Naturally, a trip to the vet was required, but after careful examination, all was found to be well.

Cindy’s prayers helped, and as she put it, the vet and “God in His infinite wisdom” chose to pop the dog’s vertebrae back in place!
We shared our refreshments (the cookies were from Brownstown UMW) and admired the brass instruments of our entertainers, Softfire-David and Patricia Pence from Hillsboro and their four border collies (Rufus, Molley, Gracie and Schekem). We sang “Happy Birthday” to everyone and let the entertainers take over.
With the Softfire collection of instruments (three trumpets, two saxophones, two clarinets and one tiny flute) they can play most any song on the face of the earth.
Today, they chose lively spirituals with strong melodies.
They also showed pictures of the new goslings they hatched on their farm. David made a sweet analogy of the Beanie Baby lamb, which provided the goslings a surrogate mother and the comfort and safety Jesus provides us.
He also detailed the relationship of John the Baptist (son of Elizabeth and the Holy Spirit) and Jesus (son of Mary and the Holy Spirit) – both earthly men who had Holy genealogies. However, Jesus had higher rank and is our only Savior through his sacrifice (death) on the cross.
David described how this sacrifice was planned since the moment of creation, in order to ensure our eternal life and reveal the love of God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit (known as the Holy Trinity). Our eternal life is our FREE GIFT from Jesus.
Then, Softfire moved on to playing some of our favorite songs.
Songs like “God’s Wonderful People” and “I Serve a Risen Savior,” and they got some of us on our feet with “When the Saints Go Marching In.”
Sympathizing with our limited knowledge of the Bible, they sang “The Sweet Bye and Bye” and “Everyday with Jesus is Sweeter than the Day Before.”
They got a little jazzier with their own special medley giving thanks to God.
The next songs were my favorites: “Mansion over the Hilltop,” “Over in Glory Land” and “Joshua Fought the Battle of Jericho,” in which we were able to sing with them.
And although there wasn’t a full house, we filled the room with joyful voices singing and uplifting our hearts.
As long as Jesus is our only Master, we will never have to follow the will of cruel and evil dictators or unchristian radical religious zealots who promote terrorism and suppress women.
This kind of evil will always exist until Jesus returns again to take us all home with him. I’m ready; any day now would be just fine!
On the more quiet side of our meeting, the pinochle table had Susan Meador and Mary Woolsey tied with Shirley Locke and Richard Kruenegel, one game for each team, but it was surprisingly close.
I really hope we can all get together next Monday. It is just GREAT to be a child of God! Let’s celebrate.
