Evergreen Outreach

By Charlene M. Jett
The credit for our lovely piano music goes to Betty Stolte. Her fingers were on key and very limber, and moved like greased lightning, creating great music for our hearts. Beulah Brown was our leader today and led us in singing Happy Birthday to Mark Floyd, Lucy Brumfield, Henrietta Eggers, Gordon Schell, Chad Doll, Alacia LeSure and Brad Elmore. We sang in two styles – regular and according to Pastor Jim Fackler and Joan.
We welcomed two new visitors – John and Jane Filer (son of Miles Filer), who were visiting him from Chappell Hill, N.C. We were also glad to have our visitor Lily Moore back again, as well as Rosamund Hobler, who has been recovering from surgery. It is sad that our long-time friend Katie Schukar passed away.
Now I was so proud to announce that Brenda Sweicki at FAYCO has knitted 1,000 baby hats for this winter! That is an accomplishment – congratulations! I hope she is planning on giving them away for Christmas presents.
Pastor Joe Lawson provided spiritual guidance on avoiding rivalries and conceitedness, and he referenced Philippians. He asked that we follow a Christ-like model in allowing others to be first. He reminded us all of not projecting a child-like attitude of always putting “me” first. He asked everyone to develop a contented heart and put Jesus first in your life.
Our entertainment for the day was Harold Sawford of the Vandalia area and his karaoke machines. He has recorded a couple of hundred songs and gave us a good performance. We heard Southern gospel and old country, which reminded many of us of better times. Some of the titles he sang were: “ God of the Mountain” one of my favorites, “Than Deny My God and Lose My Soul,” “Cold, Cold Heart,” “Lonesome Blues,” “On the Road Again,” “The Gambler,” “Honky Tank Beat” (in  Jerry Lee Lewis’ style) “ More and More” and You’re My Best Friend.”  A good selection which took our mind off the troubles of the day!
The pinochle table was very glad to have Rosamund back and teamed up with Susan Meador; they tied with Shirley Locke and Mary Woolsey. I really enjoyed seeing Rosamund back and smiling!
I would like to put in a BIG THANK YOU to all the Evergreen Outreach volunteers. This organization is driven by financial donations and volunteers – so let’s keep up the good work. This includes Phyllis Rames, Beulah Brown, Jeanie Schlicht, Ruth Ann Scott and Mary Woolsey, Marie Sutton and Karen Redfern, and all the pastors from the ministerial alliance. God thanks you very much, and Jesus loves you!
