Evergreen Outreach

By Mary Woolsey
David and Patricia Pence, known as SoftFire, provided the entertainment at Evergreen Outreach on Monday. The Pences have amazing musical talent – singing and playing several instruments – and they do make “a joyful noise unto the Lord” when they entertain. Coming with them were their four border collie dogs.
As we entered Wesley Hall at First United Methodist Church, the Pences were playing a toe-tapping version of “This is the Day That the Lord Has Made.” They followed that with “Oh, How I Love Jesus.”
The dogs, Johnny, Phoebe, Matthew, Gracie and Schekum, were already making friends with several members of the audience. After the songs, they went back to lie down on their pillows.
Cindy Hunter was the leader, and she also baked cookies for refreshments. Thanks, Cindy! For a special treat, sherbet was served along with the cookies.
Hunter listed EO members who had birthdays: Ivan Swafford, Sharon Burgess, Joan Kelly, Debbie Heflin and Travis Emerick.
David Pence gave the devotional, taking his thoughts from Genesis. He talked about Noah. When Noah was 600 years old, God told him to build a wooden boat because the world in which he lived had become sinful. Noah and his sons started to build the boat, even though they were laughed at by people.
Noah took his sons and two animals of each kind onto the boat. When the rains came (for 40 days and 40 nights), it flooded 20 feet over the highest mountain. For 150 days, they drifted. God kept the boat from sinking; sparing Noah and his sons, because they had followed God’s commandments.
In 1912, the Titanic was built of steel and was said to be unsinkable. But during its first crossing of the Atlantic, it hit an iceberg and sank. Of the 2,228 passengers, many lives were lost in the frigid water. But 1,500 were saved.
David Pence said that we should learn from such tragedies. If we turn to God, he will be with us. Jesus came to save us from our sinful ways, and will come again to take us to a perfect place where we will be safe.
SoftFire played several more songs, including “Where Could I Go But to the Lord?,” “On Jordan’s Stormy Banks,” “When the Saints Go Marching In” and “I Saw the Light.” Several guests and volunteers made a circle, marching to the spirited music.
At pinochle table No. 1, Peggy Lippold and Rosamund Hobler won two games to Flo Lange and John Hunsley’s one game. At table No. 2, Shirley Locke and Joyce Mueller won no games, while Beulah Brown and Ruth Ann Scott won one.
Next week, Joyce Staff will be the leader, the Rev. Tom Farris will give the devotional, Betty Stolte will play the piano, Joyce Mueller will write, and Judy Varga and Randy Schukar will entertain.
