Every year, residents of the Vandalia area are treated to a glimpse into our past during the Grande Levée celebration. As we enjoy that annual trip back in time, we have the opportunity to learn more of our heritage.
That opportunity is upon us. This Friday evening and all day Saturday, we will be able to enjoy the unique activities of the Grande Levée.
It all starts on Friday evening with the traditional ham and bean dinner on the Vandalia Statehouse lawn. Food will be served from 5-7:30 p.m., with entertainment and music going on during that time as well.
Saturday's full slate of activities gets under way at 10 a.m. and runs until 5 p.m. Featured this year are stage coach rides, jugglers, an Abe Lincoln presenter, puppets and bluegrass music. Artisans exhibiting at this year's Grande Levée include demonstrations on blacksmithing, pottery making, broom making, spinning, cooking, shawl making, dye making, woodworking, copper item making and basket making.
In addition, a harvest festival will be held along Gallatin Street, featuring kids' activities, a Little Miss and Little Mr. pageant, food vendors and "Junk in the Trunk" sales.
Make plans to enjoy the Grande Levée this weekend!
