The Vandalia Jr. High eighth-grade volleyball team has earned the No. 1 seed in the Teutopolis Regional, and will open play there on Saturday.

Vandalia will meet either No. 4 Cowden-Herrick or No. 5 St. Elmo at 10 a.m. at Teutopolis Jr. High, with the winner advancing to next Thursday’s 6 p.m. regional championship game.

The Jr. Lady Vandals enter the game with a 14-5 record after sweeping Jr. Mid-State Conference play.

Last Saturday, the seventh-grade squad nearly pulled off two upsets to reach the regional title game at Newton, but couldn’t quite get past top-seeded St. Elmo.

Beating No. 5 Cowden-Herrick, 25-23, 25-22, in the first round that morning, the sixth-seeded Jr. Lady Vandals gave St. Elmo a scare by winning the first set 25-21, before dropping the final two 16-25, 21-25.

The final set was tied at 21, but the Jr. Lady Eagles got four straight points to advance to the regional title game, which they won 25-21, 25-13 on Tuesday against Cumberland.

Katie Tarkington had 11 of her 15 kills on the day against St. Elmo, and she added five aces.

Other serving multiple aces for Vandalia (9-9) were: Alli Palmer (six), Bailey Younker (five) and Shelbi Stewart (four).

Getting kills were: Sydney Austin (four) and Palmer, who had three, including the game-winning against Cowden-Herrick.
