The Rev. Dr. and Mrs. Gehl and Doris Devore will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary from 11:15 a.m.-1 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 22, at First United Methodist Church, 128 N. Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue in Waukegan.
The couple was married on Aug. 22, 1940, by Mrs. Devore’s father, the Rev. Fred C. Mery, in their hometown of Altamont. Dr. and Mrs. Devore served at First United Methodist from 1963-1979, and Dr. Devore is currently pastor emeritus at the church.
While in college (1941-1944), Dr. Devore served as student pastor of the Shobonier Methodist Circuit (Shobonier, Kaskaskia, Luster Chapel and Haley Chapel). Prior to serving in Fayette County, Dr. and Mrs. Devore served Fairfield and Oakhill Methodist Churches in Jasper County.
In the late 1930s, Dr. Devore worked as a linotype operator at The Vandalia Leader, and Mrs. Devore worked at Lester-Witcher Abstract Office. The Devores have also served congregations in Westmont (1944-1956), Rockford (Grace Church, 1956-1961) and Barrington (1961-1963).
Dr. Devore received his bachelor’s degree and an honorary doctor’s degree from McKendree College in Lebanon, and completed his seminary work at Garrett Theological Seminary in Evanston.
Mrs. Devore has been active in a number of church, civic and philanthropic organizations, and together, Dr. and Mrs. Devore have been privileged to serve the cause of Christ and His kingdom throughout their 70 year marriage.
