CHAMPAIGN - Vandalia had two wrestlers advance to the semifnals on the first day of the individual state wrestling tournament.
Senior C.J. Runkel picked up an 11-3 decision, and senior Tyler Dagen earned a 6-5 decision last Thursday at the State Farm Center on the campus of the University of Illinois on the first day of the Illinois High School Association individual state tournament.
Dagen, a 152-pounder, got an impressive upset victory of No. 4 seed Austin Hedrick of St. Joseph-Ogden, coming from behind to earn a takedown with eight seconds left in the second period before holding on for the narrow win.
Runkel's 160-pound win was more decided victory, leading the whole time and now allowing his opponent, Morrison's Austin Keller, to score until the second period.
Others wrestling for the Vandals were:
-Freshman Trevor Philpot, who lost by fall in 2:24 at to Coal City's Joey Rivera at 106 pounds. Rivera is the No. 2 seed.
-Sophomore Chaston Womack, who lost 8-4 to Normal-University's Dylan Carey at 113 pounds.
-Junior Ryne Lipsey, who lost by fall at 1:11 to Monmouth-Roseville's Justin Kinney. Kinney is the No. 4 seed.
-Junior Dalton Blankenship, who lost, 10-0, to Sterling Newman Central Catholic's Jake Snow at 145 pounds. Snow is the No. 1 seed.
-Senior Seth Purcell, who lost, 7-6, to Erie's Nick Williams at 170 pounds.
-Sophomore Bobby Bradley, who lost 8-2 to Walther Christian's Pierre Pelley at 195 pounds.
