Corn Day offers many activities
As area farmers prepare for harvest, our community is preparing for this Saturday’s annual Corn Day celebration.
Sponsored by Vandalia Main Street, the event features a variety of activities – some to celebrate the prominent role that corn plays in our area’s economy and some just for fun.
The activities get under way at 7 a.m. with a community-wide yard sale promotion. (See the ad elsewhere in this issue of The Leader-Union for the addresses of more than 50 yard sales included in the event. Many also have ads in the classified section of today’s paper.)
Other events include a farmers’ market, a Little Miss and Mister Corn pageant, free horse-drawn hayrides, a haystack scramble, an antique tractor show and several corn-related craft opportunities. Live musical entertainment will be offered from noon to 2 p.m.
And for those looking to get a little exercise, a 5K Race to Downtown will be held at 8:40, starting at Wal-Mart and finishing at the Vandalia Statehouse. Prior to that race, a half-mile youth race will be held at 8 a.m. for runners ages 6 through 12.
Several Vandalia merchants are planning special promotions on Saturday. Make a point to shop at those businesses and celebrate the important role that corn plays in our community.
