City issues voluntary water conservation order

With the lack of rain the past few months in the area and the extreme heat, the city of Vandalia is issuing a Voluntary Water Conservation Order. This order is for all water customers of the city of Vandalia.

The Voluntary Water Conservation Order is a precautionary measure to help maintain water quality standards, and to lessen the mechanical strain placed on equipment at the city water treatment plant, water booster stations, and water distribution system.

Extreme hot and dry weather conditions almost always put a strain on water treatment and water supply systems. Excessive water usage causes the water plant equipment to run continuously.

By continuously running, this does not provide the time needed to replenish spent water in our water towers and can result in equipment failures.

City officials are asking everyone to voluntarily reduce their consumption of water by at least 50%, and to exercise good conservation practices in their use of water.

These conservation practices include:

*No outdoor watering of gardens or lawns during the heat of the day.

*Less frequent watering of gardens and lawns.

*Less frequent washing of vehicles.

*Use dishwashers and washing machines only with a full load.

*Check water faucets, toilets and pipes for leaks.

Mayor Gottman said, "The city of Vandalia would like to extend its thanks in advance to all of our water customers for their cooperation in conserving water during this extremely hot and dry time.

This is something that we hoped we would not have to do, but it is something that needs to be done. Once again it is a voluntary order, and it is my hope that by everyone cooperating, the city will not be forced to implement a mandated order.

This order will remain in effect until further notice and may be terminated if the weather conditions change.
