City hikes Vandalia Lake camping fees

To keep its fees in line with other sites in the area, the city of Vandalia has increased its camping rates at Vandalia Lake.

Approving the hikes recommended by the Vandalia Lake Committee, the city council voted in increase the nightly rate for camping spaces with electrical hookups from $12 to $15.

The ordinance amendment also increases the nightly rate for sites without electrical hookups from $7 to $10, and the 20-night block from $220 to $260.

The councils action also raised the nightly fee charged to seniors on weeknights (Monday-Thursday) from $7 to $12. Seniors, age 65 and over, will pay the regular rate on holidays.

The council approved the increases on a 6-1 vote, with Alderman Jerry Swarm casting the lone dissenting vote. Bret Brosman, Lisa McNutt, Barbie Elliott, Larry Cable, Larry Bennett and Mike Hobler, who serves as the lake committee chairman, voted for the hikes. Chad Feldpouch was absent.

Everyone else has raised their rates in the last couple of years, and its time for Vandalia to do that also, Hobler said.

Also at Mondays meeting:

Public Works Director John Moyer reported that the replacement of a water main on Eighth Street just west of the Fayette County Courthouse was to be completed with the chlorinization of that line in the next few days.

Swarm, the chairman of the councils police, fire and ESDA committee, reported that the city will be accepting applications for police officer through June 7. Testing for applicants will be held on June 14.

The city hires police officers off of an eligibility roster that has officer candidates ranked by test results. Swarm said there is only one candidate left on the current roster.

Swarm reported that the relocation of police department telephone lines into the north end of the former city has been completed.

The next step is to relocate radio service lines from the south end of the building.

After the police department completes its move into the north end of the building, the fire department will expand into the area now used by the police department.

Vandalia Main Street Program Director Dana Whiteman reported that the organization will use grant funds from the Old Capitol Foundation to help spruce up Lincoln Park.

She said the paint on the south wall of the park, which includes a painting of Abraham Lincoln, and the wall will be covered with drivit stucco. To be incorporated into the drivit is a profile of Lincoln, either in recessed or raised form.

Whiteman said Main Street will use a grant from the Charles Ruemmelin Foundation for an informational kiosk in Lincoln Park and two more murals in the downtown business district. That kiosk will include a directory of downtown businesses.

Whiteman reported that the deadline to submit nominations for the Vandalia Tourism Commissions Vandalia in Bloom contest are being accepted through 8:30 a.m. on Monday, June 2.

Individuals may nominate friends or neighbors for the contest by filling out forms that are available at Vandalia City Hall.
