Churches combine to present cantata

Immanuel (Augsburg) and St. Paul Lutheran churches of Shobonier and St. Peter Lutheran Church of St. Peter will present a Christmas cantata called "Child of Hope" this weekend.

With combined voices from the three congregations, plus audience participation, the cantata expresses in new as well as familiar music the real message of Christmas – the birth of Christ.

Performances will take place at Immanuel (Augsburg) Lutheran Church on Saturday at 3 p.m.; at St. Paul Lutheran Church on Sunday at 2 p.m.; and at St. Peter Lutheran Church on Sunday at 7 p.m.

A free-will offering will be received.

C&S benefit breakfast is this Sunday

A breakfast to benefit the Caring & Sharing program will be offered this Sunday at Mother of Dolors Catholic Church Parish Center.

Sponsored by the church's youth group, the breakfast runs from 8:30 a.m. to noon. A free-will offering will be accepted, with all proceeds going to Caring & Sharing.

The parish center is located at 705 W. St. Clair St. in Vandalia.

Caring & Sharing distribution to begin

The Fayette County Caring & Sharing program – which provides Christmas baskets for needy families in the county – has launched its 2010 collection effort. Distribution will be done next week.

Once again, Mother of Dolors Catholic Church will serve as the collection and distribution point for the program. Among the items being sought are: non-perishable food items, new or like-new toys, winter clothing (mittens, hats, gloves, scarves and socks), hand-held games, hair accessories, Christmas decorations and disposable tableware.

Monetary contributions are used to purchase perishable foods and special gifts. Those contributions should be made at First National Bank or First Bank locations in Vandalia.

Holy Cross Lutheran bake sale Saturday

Holy Cross Lutheran Church will host a bake sale at the church this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The church is located at 726 W. Fillmore St. in Vandalia.

First Christian plans Christmas events

First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Vandalia will be holding several Christmas-related events during December.

The Rev. Robert Francisco will do a series of Advent sermons.

A Christmas cantata, "On This Very Night," will be presented on Sunday, Dec. 19, during the 10 a.m. service. Directed by Nancy Childress, the cantata will feature songs by Jim Bowen, Mary Lynn Bowen, Childress, Wendy Goodin, Doris Hubler and Connie McDowell.

A "Lessons & Carols" Christmas Eve service will be held at 7 p.m.


FUMC to present cantata on Sunday

An Advent cantata will be performed this Sunday at 10 a.m. at First United Methodist Church of Vandalia.

The program will include several musicians, and members of the Greenville College Choir will join the FUMC choir for the program.
