Life Chain event to be held in Vandalia on Sunday afternoon

Members of local churches will participate in the national Life Chain observance this Sunday from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., at the corner of Kennedy Boulevard and Gallatin Street.
According to organizers, the event is designed as a "peaceful and prayerful public witness of pro-life individuals standing for prayer for our nation and for an end to abortion."

Zion Lutheran to hold wiener roast fundraiser this Sunday

Zion Lutheran Church in Loogootee is hosting a "Raise the Roof" wiener roast fundraiser this Sunday at 5 p.m. at the church.
On the menu will be hot dogs, buns, drinks, chips and marshmallows. Table service will be furnished.
The event is being held to raise money to put a new roof on the church. In addition to the price of the meal, donations also are being accepted.
Additional financial assistance will be provided by Thrivent for Lutherans.

Car wash, bake sale Saturday
at Sunset Convenience Store

The youth group at First Pentecostal Church will sponsor a $5 car wash and a bake sale and grill this Saturday, starting at 10 a.m. at Sunset Convenience Store at the intersection of Sunset Drive and Veterans Avenue.
Also on sale will be Krispy Kreme donuts, cookbooks and candles. All proceeds will go to the youth group's activities.
Chocolate-themed ladies event planned Oct. 19 in Brownstown

Brownstown First Christian Church will hold a ladies day on Friday, Oct. 18, from 5-7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 19, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The theme for the event is: "Cafe Chocolat – Where Women Delight in God's Grace."
Cafe Chocolat is a relaxing chocolate-themed retreat for women ages 14 and up. It includes worship, Bible study and time for quiet reflection. The chocolate theme was chosen as a metaphor for God's extravagant grace.
Cost for the retreat is $7 for one day or $10 for both days. That fee covers two meals. Participants receive a tote bag, a journal, a pen, a bracelet and a cookbook.
On Friday evening, participants will be able to browse through displays on scrapbooking, Tupperware, Mary Kay products, specialty coffee and tea, and custom-made jewelry. Free blood-pressure checks will be provided by the Fayette County Health Department.

Called Out Quartet to perform this Saturday at The Barn

The Called Out Quartet from Nashville, Tenn., will perform a free concert at 7 p.m. this Saturday at The Barn in rural Pana.
Prior to the concert, a hot potato bar will be available for a suggested donation of $6. The meal includes a large potato, 13 toppings, a drink and a dessert.

First Christian Church to hold rummage sale Friday, Saturday

First Christian Church of Vandalia will hold its semi-annual rummage sale this Friday (8 a.m. to 4 p.m.) and Saturday (8 a.m. to noon).
Proceeds will be used to support many local projects, such as the Summer Lunch Program, Habitat For Humanity, Tools For Schools, the food pantry, Camp Walter Scott and Samaritan's Purse.
The church is located at 305 N. Fifth St.
 
LWML holds zone fall rally

The Altamont Zone of the Central Illinois District of the Lutheran Women's Missionary League held its fall rally on Sept. 25 at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Vandalia. The theme was "Streaming with the Lord."
Chairing the rally were Mary Aukamp and Amy Meseke. They hosted Janet Williams, zone president; Annie Guerettaz, zone vice president; Linda Rhodes, secretary-treasurer; Sheila Lutz, district vice president of Christian life; the Rev. Jason Rensner, district counselor; the Rev. Joshua Frazee, zone counselor; three pastors; 60 LWML members and eight guests.
The speaker at the rally was Shelley Moeller, who serves on the district board. She talked about her walk of faith and the work of LWML.
Also at the rally, newly elected zone secretary-treasurer Judy Wasmuth was installed.
The LWML is a service organization of the Lutheran Church -Missouri Synod.
