Brownstown youth again leads her BES class in collecting tabs for Shriners

By Rich Bauer, Managing Editor

Students in a class at Brownstown Elementary School have again helped a classmate in her ongoing effort to pay back a hospital that has treated her.

Mykala Torbeck, the daughter of Ron and Debbie Torbeck, has been treated at Shriners Hospital for Children in St. Louis, and she has been collecting can tabs to benefit the hospital since she collected 3 gallons of tabs when she was 3 years old.
Mykala and her fifth-grade classmates at BES recently turned into the Shriners 40 gallons of tabs.
Overall, Mykala has collected 153 gallons of tabs this year.
Others who have contributed to the total include Girl Scout Troop 8390 of Brownstown.
Mykala and other Girl Scouts turned in 12 gallons of tabs. Scouts helping include Abby Boedecker, Bray Logsdon, Malanie Parkison, Arickah Newburn, Victoria Johnson, Keely Duran, Makyla Stombaugh, Oliva Campbell, Willow Brown and Jarin Evans.
Other contributors included the Vandalia Moose Lodge, American Legion in Keyesport, Old National Trail Shrine Club of Vandalia, and numerous friends and families of the Torbecks.
"It just keeps escalating," Ron Torbeck said about his daughter's continuing efforts to collect can tabs.
