Catholic Daughters members hear reports

The Mother of Dolors’ Catholic Daughters meeting on Jan. 5 was called to order by Regent Debby Themig, who opened with the pledge to the flag and one decade of the rosary for Brian and Virginia Garner. Everyone was asked to finish this rosary on their own.
Correspondence included thank-you cards from Bonnie Murray, Lighthouse Pregnancy Center and Port Arthur International Seafarers Center, and a letter from George Green with correct address for his mother, Gertrude Green.
Themig read from the national newsletter highlighting logo, “Bring One-Gain One,” encouraging members to tell about and invite someone to CDA meetings and events, national projects and March For Life’s 40th anniversary.
Reports of chairmen included: quality of life – Marlys Hayner thanked CDA members for their donations, and group and individual help for Caring and Sharing. Five hundred families were helped county-wide, with 196 baskets in Vandalia/Shobonier.
Under the legislation report, Hayner presented the National Right to Life newsletter information that many pro-life candidates were elected. She reported a drop in abortions nationwide in 2014 and that Illinois abortions were the lowest since 1974.
Grace Thull gave a report on the Christmas party held on Dec. 6 with the Knights of Columbus. The party included food, fellowship and a game of trivia.
Thull also reported that two boxes of ditty bag donations of personal care items were sent to the Apostolate of the Sea for servicemen at all seaports in the U.S.
Kim Taylor reported on the recent Butter Braids’ fundraiser, stating that 172 items were sold, with 28 members participating.
The Catholic Daughters will be preparing desserts for the annual Lenten K of C fish fries, starting Feb. 20.  Pat Jackson presented signup sheets for deserts and volunteers to work the dessert table.
Themig announced that Father Barry will be celebrating his 25th anniversary, and she will check to see if CDA can help him celebrate with a parish event.
The January Mass will be said for Brian Garner and his family.
The Traveling Mary went to Rhonda Denton.
The closing prayer for vocations was led by Marlys Hayner.
Door prizes were won by Pat Jackson and Bonnie Murray.
