? Soroptimist International of Vandalia is inviting all local women and young ladies to its program at noon at Ponderosa Steakhouse. The guest speaker, Marisa Thomason, will talk about her recent mission trip to El Salvador. All guests are welcome to purchase lunch if they wish. Friday, September 21

? The Regional Office of Education No. 3 Learning Express Program will hold a free book walk for families with young children at 10 a.m. at the pavilion in Rogier Park in Vandalia. It will include a story time, parent-child activity, and a book and snack to take home. For inclement weather details, check their facebook page at roe3learningexpressprogram.
? Vandalia Community High School is celebrating homecoming. The homecoming parade is at 2:30 p.m., this year's inductees will be introduced prior to the varsity football game, which begins at 6:30 p.m. and this year's king and queen will be crowned at halfime of the football game.
? Bingo is held at Crawford-Hale American Legion Post 95 home. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and bingo begins at 7 p.m.
? Brownstown High School is holding its inaugural Alumni Weekend. The activities include bingo from 6-8 p.m. and self-guided tours of the school on Friday at Brownstown Junior-Senior High School. For more information, contact Principal Jeff Wooters or Ashley Towler at the high school, 427-3839.
? A Nar-Anon meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at Northside Christian Church, 1845 W. Jackson St., Vandalia.

Saturday, Sept. 22

? Temperance Lodge No. 16 A.F. & A.M. is holding a yard sale in the basement of the Masonic Temple from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. to raise funds for its scholarship fund for Vandalia students.
? Brownstown VFW Post 9770's annual Nine-Mile Gut Check is being held. The walk/run begins at 8 a.m. at the American Legion Home in Vandalia and ends at the Brownstown VFW Post Home. The registration fee of $35 includes a meal and refreshments, as well as a Nine-Mile Gut Check T-Shirt. A $10 donation is requested from individuals not participating in the run/walk but would like to attend the meal. ? The St. Elmo Food Bank, rescheduled from Sept. 8, will be held at 10 a.m. at Pinnacle Foods in St. Elmo. Those attending are to take bags or boxes for food.
? Brownstown High School is holding its inaugural Alumni Weekend at Brownstown Junior-Senior High School. Activities include self-guided tours of the school, a bake sale and art show from 9-11 a.m., cookout from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., and men's alumni basketball game at 1 p.m. Registration forms for the alumni game are available at the junior/senior high office and online at www.bcusd201.com.
? Vandalia's Little Community Garden Harvest Festival is from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Mother of Dolors Parish Center, 705 W. St. Clair St. It will include graden goods, lunch, about 30 vendors, and for children, the Soroptimist's Build a Scarecrow and a Fayette County 4-H activity booth.
? Southwestern Electric is holding an e-waste drive for Southwestern customers only from 9 a.m.-noon at RR 2, St. Elmo. CJD E-Cycling accepts anything with a cord, such as LED/LCD flat screen televisions and monitors, printers, video game consoles, and computer monitors. It will also accept anything containing metal, such as PC towers,  cable boxes, cell phones, wireless modems, holiday lights, servers, audio/video equipment, and home electronics.Due to difficulty, bulk, and stricter EPA guidelines, it is becoming more and more difficult to recycle old television sets. CJD E-Cycling will be accepting CRT, projection, console, and plasma TVs for a minimal fee of $5-$30. Other incidental fees may come from recycled CRT computer monitors that are not accompanied by a tower, running from $5-$10.
? The Illinois Federation for Outdoor Resources membership drive and cookout, canceled on Sept. 8, will be held at Gatch Lake/St. Peter's Sportsman's Club. It will include free food from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., multiple gun raffles, silent auction, 50/50 drawing, general raffle, youth gun give-away, crafts and activities for children, and a horseshoes tournament, signup at 11 a.m., tournament at noon.
? The 10th annual Model A Ford Day is being held from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at Fred B. Johnson Park, 200 Spruce St., Nokomis. The first 30 Model A registered will be given a dash plaque.
? The Fayette County Cancer Fund's Carnival in the Park is from 4-8 p.m. at Rogier Park on Fillmore Street in Vandalia. It will include food, games, bounce houses, horse rides, facepainting, balloon creatures, musical entertainment and about 30 vendors. In the event of rain, it will be held at the Family YMCA of Fayette County on Rock Island Avenue in Vandalia.
? Crown Point Church in rural Vandalia is holding its annual picnic from 5-7 p.m. The menu for the free meal includes: fish, hamburgers and hot dogs; French fries; cole slaw; baked beans; dessert; and drinks. The public is invited. The church is located at 966 N. Carlyle Road; follow Eighth Street south about seven miles. ? The Vandalia Alumni and Friends Foundation's All-School Reunion will be held at the Vandalia Moose Lodge. A social hour with hors d'oeuvres is from 5-6:30- p.m., followed by dinner from 6:30-8 p.m. and the presentation of this year's recipients of the foundation's Distinguished Alumni Award. This year's recipients are Kathy Schultz, John Kaiser and Jody Sperry. The menu for the dinner is  fried chicken, smoked pork loin, twice-baked potato casserole, green beans, carrots, layered salad, rolls and dessert. Tickets are $25 each; reservations are to be sent to the high school.

? The Vandalia Lions Club meets at Ponderosa Steakhouse. The meal is at 6 p.m. and meeting is at 6:30 p.m.

Tuesday, September 25

? The Vandalia Rotary Club meets at noon at Ponderosa Steakhouse.
? The Alzheimer's support group at Aperion Care at 221 Cumberland Road in St. Elmo meets at 6 p.m.

Thursday, September 27

? The Fayette County Retired Teachers will meet at 10:30 a.m. at Ponderosa Steakhouse in Vandalia. All retired teachers are invited to attend.
? Evans Public Library's Homeschool Group meets from 1-2 p.m. Anyone interested in joining the group should contact Shawna Sprague at the library, 283-2824.

Saturday, Sept. 29

? Lighthouse Pregnancy and Health Services will hold a 5K/Walk-4-Life at Deken Park in St. Elmo. Check-in is at 7 a.m., a pre-event rally is at 7:45 a.m., and the 5K run and two-mile walk begin at 8 a.m. The cost is $25 for adults and $15 for children ages 12 and under. Participants can sponsor participants for the event. All 5K runners will receive a participation medal, and top runners in each age category will receive recognition. To register or sponsor participants, call 283-8750.
? The Vandalia Out of the Darkness Walk will be held at the Lions Club pavilion at Vandalia Lake. Check-in and registration is at 2 p.m., and the walk is from 3-5 p.m. It will include a candlelight memorial and music by "Cary Miller Band," and shirt will be available for purchase. The walk provides fundraising for suicide prevention, a group of individuals providing support to each other and a memorial to remember those lost to suicide.
