Critters Enjoying Cooler Weather
Baby Bucky Burro, for one, has been kicking up his heels, running to get to the carrots before “Mom” and just seems to be generally enjoying life.
They have been enjoying just lying and napping in the warm sunshine, but they come to their gate to watch us drive in now, and are being more attentive when anything is going on.
Lady, the sweet senior mini-horse, is not showing any change in her demeanor. She has always been calm and quiet, watching what goes on around her, but not joining in any antics or real strenuous action.
When our (late) adorable little donkey used to run and play with his RK barrel on very hot days, or sometimes in the middle of the night, Lady would stand and watch him, and you could almost see her thinking that he had lost his mind. She just seemed too much like a lady to take part in that foolishness.
We, too, are enjoying the cool, autumn weather and are looking forward to the leaves changing into beautiful hues and bright colors … and remember, they aren’t dying, they are just resting until spring.
Betsy Longhorn and her bovine family still seem to have plenty of pasture food to nibble on, but we are ready to bring some hay in for them, because Jack Frost is probably lurking around the corner.
These Busy, Busy Times …
… and more ahead. The weather has been really nice for the various activities and fundraisers going on, and as the needs continue, there are still several opportunities to enjoy get out in this beautiful weather. Be thankful for all we have and enjoy the various activities and opportunities to help someone else.
This weekend (Sept. 26-day & night) is especially busy, but we should try to go to one or two of them, if not all, or a portion of each.

Brownstown VFW Post 9770
9 Mile Gut Check Walk/Run…
… was held on Saturday, with 130 participants registered. The walkers/runners gathered at the American Legion in Vandalia and began the trek to the Brownstown VWF Post 9770, the end of the nine-mile trek. There they were given a lunch and were joined by supporters of the event who did not participate in the run.
A photograph of CW03 Jonaathon S. Gibdon , Navy pilot of the Screaming Indian 617,  was on prominent display in the building, with the information that he was reported KIA-MIA over the Red Sea on Sept. 22, 2013.
The event was honored by the presence of special guests, Mrs. Chrissy Gibson their children, daughter Makayun Gibson and son Xander Gibson.
Also present were family members Sandy Ricke,mother-in-law; JoAnn Lake, his mother; and Mike Lake, his stepdad.
Chrissy Gibson shared some of her thoughts: “September 22 marks two years since the disappearance of U.S. helicopter pilot CW03 Johnathan S. Gibson. He was an amazing husband, father, son, brother and friend.
His memory lives on in all we do and we were honored to walk together with the community, in honor of Jon and all of the brave men and women that never made it home.”
Not a Race….
…for the finish line, as all were applauded as they reached the Brownstown VFW driveway. There were no losers, as every last participant was a winner, for their willingness to walk nine miles in honor of the men and women, the veterans, who gave much more than a nine-mile march for our country.
However, it was noted that of the women’s time on the walk, Christi Pruett and Raychael Orr were the first two ladies and Marcus Durbin and Lucas Mette were the first two men to reach the designated end of the nine miles.
All who helped, whether walking, running, preparing lunch, handling registrations, etc., are also to be commended. Northside Christian Church of Vandalia provided its church van to transport people back to Vandalia.
