Frog(s) Saga Update
And the saga continues. It all began when a little green tree frog named “Tarzan”  made the Brownstwn news with his appearance on the artificial tree I bought for 2 bucks to supplement the Homestead’s “30 acres of trees,” quoting Bill.
Then, correspondent sister Anna Jean Rhodes shared her story about a little green frog that had taken up residence in her mailbox .. and even returned to the mailbox after she had set him free!
Then, Nathan Scholes told us that he had a buddy frog that appeared in the office, and he shared a photo of the little guy.
Tarzan, or a  look-alike imposter, moved up to our porch and frequently serenades us while we are sitting outside. One day, there were two of them. One has stayed with us, clinging to the wall near the porchlight. We think he is probably having midnight bug snacks under the light.
Now we have discovered a little green guy in the bathtub in our little bathroom! He doesn’t make any sounds, just sits in there on a green towel I had draped on the tub.
Since he is staying in the bathroom, I have named him (ready for this one?) “Prince Charmin.”
Bill said he thinks this is the year of the frog, since we have never had this frog phenomenon before. (I do believe however, that I read there was once a frog invasion; it was referred to as a “plague”-Psalms 48:75.)
The most famous and popular frog, I believe, is named Kermit, and he just sounds too good to be true.
We have not heard yet if our sister correspondent, Belinda Harpster, who writes the  Frogtown news, has anything to share with us concerning this matter. (I wonder if I should get an i“pod.”)
Hi, Ho, Come to the Fair
The Fayette County Fair, that is. It begins on Saturday, and the Homestead Human Inhabitants (namely Bill & Panzi) are looking forward to attending. Our favorites include the 4-H competitions, especially the animals, but we enjoy the other categories, also. All of the 4-H competitions have required a lot of commitment, work, conscientious keeping of records, etc., and, unquestionably, the 4-H builds character, good habits, cooperation, good relationships with others, and, of course, good sportsmanship.
Sadly, everyone can’t win a blue ribbon – it wouldn’t be a competition if they could.
One of my favorite sights at the fair is seeing the kids with the ribbons they have won stuck in the back pockets of their jeans. It seems to be a casual thing they do, but those kids have worked hard to win those ribbons, and they are proud of them,  just modest.
Something should be said also for the parents (who also surely sacrifice at times) and their 4-H leaders, who do not stand in the spotlight when awards are being given, but you can be sure they, like the parents/grandparents, are standing in the background.
Fayette County HCE Members …
… are being encouraged (or urged) to participate in the competitions like garden produce, baking, hobbies, photography, handwork, painting, etc., etc., to help support the county fair. The entries need to be taken over this Saturday.
Sadly, many communities across the country have discontinued the county fairs, and we don’t want that to happen to ours. But the fair board needs our moral support, and the best way to show that is too attend and participate.
And the Knights of Columbus Fish Sandwiches…
… yummmm, are the icing on the cake (so to speak). We always look forward to the fish sandwiches, which are still absolutely delicious, and the guys always put a generous serving of fish on the buns.
My dad always took us to the Fayette County Fair for a fish sandwich when I was a kid and the tradition has stayed in my heart and my appetite.
The Brownstown school boosters’ lemon shake-ups are also a treat, along with the Eagle Nest’s funnel cakes, pork sandwiches, and other tasty treats by many vendors.
And, of course, the grandstand presentations have something for everyone – the pageants, races, programs and contests.
It seems that there are a lot of “etc.” periods in this article, but that is the way the Fayette County Fair is – a lot of extras and etc. periods, including seeing your neighbors, old and new acquaintances, relatives, etc. (There I go again!)  So, I hope to see you at the fair.
Sefton HCE Will Meet …
… at the Brownstown High School parking lot at 10:30 a.m. on July 15 for our yearly outing.
