Baby Buckwheat – A Little, But Loved Orphan
Madricka, baby Bucky Burro’s mother, left him in the care of us and lady, the mini-horse, on Tuesday, Aug. 30, at midnight. She laid down and couldn’t get up on Monday. Dr. Bristow and his assistant, Taylor, arrived in record time to check her over and obtain lab work, and he did get her up on her feet. He gave her an antibiotic and a vitamin B shot.
The next day (Tuesday) she was up on her feet all day, eating and drinking, and all systems seemed to be working. We continued giving her vitamins, but that evening, she again laid down and we couldn’t get her back up on her feet.
We stayed with her until she died at midnight, with us and little Bucky near her.
She had such a sweet disposition and was a good (if permissive and maybe a little over-indulgent) mother to Bucky.
She was special from the first few moments we saw her and Bucky at the donkey and horse farm where they lived before coming to the Homestead.
We were standing just inside the door of a big barn at her former home, looking over the many different donkeys and mini-horses. She and her baby were grazing out a ways in the pasture and she came up to the barn with her baby, as if to look us over.
She looked at us a few minutes, then walked up to me and leaned her head against my leg. She just stood there as I petted her. Her owner seemed surprised she did that, and when we decided to buy her baby, he offered to let us take her along – a bonus.
As I was already thinking that it would be cruel to separate them, we were thrilled. Neither of them were named, so they quickly become “Madricka” the mother, and “Buckwheat” Burro, aka Baby Bucky.
A Touching Vigil
As it was so late that night, we covered her up with a tarpaulin until morning.
Very early the next morning, I went out and saw Bucky was standing beside her. His coat was wet with dew, so we believe he stayed with her all night instead of going to his barn.
We know he is missing her. He is getting extra carrot snacks, and we try to spend more time with him right now. Lady is in the adjoining pen and shares the barn with him, separated only by a fence panel as a divider, so they can touch noses and communicate.
We don’t know what was wrong with Madrika, as most of her blood work was good, and tests didn’t show anything significant. Dr. B did think she seemed a little sore in her hip area. We wonder if it may have been her heart.
She seemed to have chosen us at the donkey farm, and we miss her and wish she were still with us. We are thankful for the time she was with us … and we will continue to love her little son, Bucky, and the memory of his sweet mother.

A Note About Nadine
Having met Nadine’s “Other Self”, I want to share my impression of her, as a genuine, loving person.
First of all, at the risk of exposing her, I want to say that, before she puts on her Nadine hat, flowered dress and long stockings at half-mast), she is a lovely lady with a lovely smile and beautiful eyes thatalso smile sincerely at you, even though it is the first time she meets you. Her hair is pretty, and she dresses pretty much like us (casually, when I met her). Her actual shape is well-hidden under Nadine’s rather generous, random, add-on physical assets.
This lady has went through much the same sort of life’s obstacles that many of us have, and, yet, she came through, not feeling sorry for herself, but with the goal of helping others through life’s bumps and disappointments, by providing us with the second-best medicine, a way to forget our problems for a while and laugh, really laugh!
The first “best medicine” is trust and prayer, which is described and taught in the book she carries, which is not a prop; it is the one part of Nadine’s onstage costume that is real and never taken off nor put aside. It is her life’s guide – God’s Word.
We have been informed that this is possibly Nadine’s last appearance in Brownstown, which she has so generously made for several years to benefit the Brownstown Branch Library.
Nadine is hilariously funny, unique and, underneath the outspoken, witty and sometimes a little sharp-tongued and outrageous, still a loveable personality and a real, warm and caring, friendly woman.
Hopefully, Brownstown and surrounding towns will give her and her friends a resounding welcome … and let her know we love her.
