Brownstown-Sefton News

The Homestead Critters …
… are all doing well, but are probably, like us human inhabitants, looking forward to spring, which is really not far away.
The Little Barn Critters – Lady, the little senior mini-mare, has never seemed to be uncomfortable in the winter weather this year, but she does stay in her “apartment” in the barn  when the wind is strong and cold. She still has her fuzzy winter coat and is eating her special food with a good appetite (her food is “special” for her age and digestion as she probably can’t chew her food as well).
Buckwheat “Bucky” Burro, is also doing very well, as he, too, has a warm fuzzy winter coat, but I do get concerned that his pretty long ears might get cold sometimes. He has a very good appetite and still enjoys his carrot treats (although he doesn’t get them as often in bad or really rainy weather).
They will both get more personal attention when it warms up, and they will need brushed and combed to get rid of their fuzzy fur.
Katie, the outdoor doggie, of course, has spent a lot of time in our house when the weather has been really cold. She is a good doggie in the house, and she is also a really good doggie outside.
I feel certain that she saved the chickens when she barked so hard and jumped up high against her fence when a ferocious-looking critter was checking out the chicken pen.
I saw the critter’s face and body very clearly, and I am sure it was a wolverine although I was told emphatically that there are none in this part of the country. But I was still sure that is what it was. (I learned about two weeks later that one had been hit by a car a just a few miles north of here.
No one believed me either, when I reported seeing a wolf either a few years ago; now, several respected, reliable people have reported seeing “Sneaky Pete,” the elusive, but real, wolf that we had been seeing around the homestead for several years.
He has more recently visited our neighbors across the road. He was interested in Debbie’s ducks and, sadly, I’m afraid, her cats, which started disappearing. We’re afraid he wanted them to join him for dinner, for which he used to want “SnowWhite,” lovely, now belated,  Homestead goose.
We haven’t seen Sneaky Pete for a long time and wonder about his welfare, which I really don’t want to know about, if he has, perchance, not fared well.
