Brownstown-Sefton News

In Answer to Inquiries…
…Betsy, the Longhorn, and her “pen pals”  (the Bartels’ girl, Geneva; “Red,” the rebel, and the two youngsters, Minny and Mosia ) are doing fine, contentedly grazing, chewing their cud, napping and switching each other’s backs with their tails for fly control.
Their pasture is on the east side of the lane. The cows on the west side of the lane belong to our neighbor.
Red gets the nickname “the rebel” because she was slated to go to the sale barn some years ago when she was a youngster. However, although the rest of the select few went right up into the trailer, she ran and jumped the fence into the other “unselectees’s pasture. (Actually, the unselectees were the fortunate ones).
She has remained obstinate and also very greedy at mealtime, but she gets along with the other ladies otherwise, so she still remains on the Homestead.
From the Chicken Roost…
…Blackie, the hen, has been making weird noises in the mornings, so we think she is trying to crow again, as she used to do regularly.
Blackie was so traumatized by Anita’s (chicken) untimely death that she hasn’t crowed since that fateful day.
The girls (Rhonda and Blackie) are still laying nice, big, brown eggs and scratch and pick contentedly, clucking and talking companionably.
Many Roses & Tips of the hat to…
The Community Choir & The Community Band
…that provided the lively, beautiful and reverent music for the Brownstown Memorial Day program.
It was the icing on the cake for the beautiful and inspiring service that the Brownstown VFW Post 9770 presented, which seems to get better and draws bigger crowds every year.
• The Community Choir members were Robin Lovett, Joann Strobel, Susan Smith, Terry Smith, Deanna Kestner, Cathy Smith, Morgan Pryor, Phyllis Pryor, Judy Watson, Deanna Hovious, Joylynn Strobel, Matthew Smith, Jamie Smith, Sherry Meador, Ron Hunter, Flo Allen, Vernus Lytle, Don Thomas, Don Lovett, Marlys Thomas, Brenda Kline, Jim Green and Jack Shelton.
• The Community Band members were Amelia Garrard, Shawn Carter, Paula Brunk, Joylynn Strobel, Pierce Strobel and Kaitlyn Enlow.
• Special mention to Pierce Strobel, who closed the service with the familiar, poignant strains of “Taps,” and also brought some closure to memories of those lost, but not forgotten, lives we honored.
Roses and Tips of the Hat also to our VFW Post …
… and “thanks” for bringing the Memorial Day program to us for the 17th year.
A much-greater thank you also goes to the members, our veterans, who have served our country to keep us free. They have done so much, and they are still giving.
Coming & Going
Catching up with Ken, Wanda and Debbie
Ken and Wanda Puleo and Debbie McDonald went to Dix Sunday afternoon.
A long-time friend of Wanda’s, Louise Bruce, had died, and they attended the graveside services for her at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, south of Dix.
They then went on to visit with Wanda’s mother, Ethel Pittman, at Dix. Phillip Bruce had been busy adding a deck and ramp to her house, which will be a welcome convenience.
Ethel is looking forward to being able to spend some time outdoors soon, and enjoy the sunshine and music of the birds.
Special St. Elmo Cookbook in the Making
Darline Swanson, a former St. Elmo gal who now lives in Little Rock, Ark., said that a group in St. Elmo is sending her recipes, as well as some who are from St. Elmo, but no longer live there.
Darline is going to put the recipes in book form. This will be interesting to keep up with and to know what the name of the cookbook will be when it is published. We hope Darline keeps us posted.
