Brownstown-Sefton News
In Response to Inquiries
The Homestead Critters are tolerating the heat and dry weather. Several have asked about the critters, since it has been so hot. Papa Bear Bill has been keeping them supplied with fresh water, and they all have shade and/or shelter.
• Betsy LongHorn, the Bartels girl (namely Geneva), and the three youngsters, surprise us, as they do not take advantage of their shade trees.
They seem to like to lie in the sunshine, even in the 100-plus degree weather.
They do pair off and stand head to tail end, and switch their tails to keep the flies off their partner. This usually leaves one cow out, but one day three of them were standing together, which really worked good for the one in the middle.
They seem very content. Their pasture is getting a lot of brown in it, so we may have to start feeding hay early this year, if we don’t get a rain.
Smoky, the (adorable) donkey never seems to mind the weather, hot or cold, but he doesn’t like precipitation of any kind, especially on his long, beautiful ears. His buddies, the mini-horses, seem to be doing OK, also. Lady nickers to us when she sees us.
• Katy, the new puppy, bounces around, plays and runs early in the mornings, then rests and naps through the heat of the day.
She is potty-training herself, as she waits until we let her out in the mornings before she goes to the bathroom.
She is growing. She is tall enough now to reach the formerly out-of-reach items on the lawn chair.
She is eating good, and knows where her bowl is if we don’t get it quick enough. She runs to it to show us where it is.
• Callie, surprisingly, likes to stay outside through the day, although we encouraged her to come into the AC. She has certain places she likes to nap at, and comes to the door when she wants in.
• Josie, the 13 year-old-puppy, seems to feel the heat the most, although she is always in the air-conditioned house (except for necessary outings). Sunday, she was very lethargic, stirring only when it was time for her to eat.
• Star, the little white dove, seems OK, although she has been pretty quiet.
Thanks for your concern about the critters. I’ll tell them you asked about them.

Coming & Going
Catching Up With the Puleos & Debbie
Ken and Wanda Puleo and Debbie McDonald went to Findlay last Tuesday to watch Ken’s grand nephew, Jared Bunfill, play baseball, Okaw Valley vs. Sullivan.
Saturday, the Puleos and Debbie went to Dix to visit with Wanda’s mother, Ethel Pittman. A cousin, Gale McBride, and Phillip and Jaunita Bruce, also visited.
Breakfast with Cousin Norma
A rare occurrence – cousin Norma Weaver and I caught up with each other and enjoyed a leisurely, lengthy, coffee and sweet roll break at the Liberty Ice Cream Shop last week. As we parted, we said we wore going to do this (hopefully) more often.
Golden Years Club Meets
Twenty-one members and one guest were present for the Golden Years meeting and potluck meal on Tuesday, June 26, at the Golden Years building in Brownstown. Tiny American flags, held by marshmallows, were at each place, compliments of Flo Allen.
Vice President Joe Kelly gave the welcome, in the absence of the president, Don Thomas, who was running late due to doing a good deed for someone homebound. (Thomas soon arrived bearing armloads of produce from the community garden.)
Kelly called on a favorite guest of the club, Pastor Jim Dann, to ask the blessing for the meal. The birthday/anniversary people were invited to be served first. The hearty, healthy, meal included Dan Thomas’ ham and beans, cornbread and custard pie, Helen’s rice pudding, and several fresh vegetables prepared in various ways.
Following the completion of duties of Donnie’s cleanup kitchen crew, Thomas opened the meeting and discussed some needed repairs to be done in the near future.
Treasurer Donnie Smail gave the financial report of bills paid, and shared the good news of a generous donation from friends of the club, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Voisin. It was mentioned that, as the club had recently given a donation of $100 to the Summer Lunches for Brownstown Kids, that the club was blessed in turn by the Voisin’s gift.
Readings were given by Smail, Erma Budlove, Allen and Shirley Klitzing. Smail told a joke, and Thomas gave two readings.
The meeting was adjourned. The next potluck/meeting will be Tuesday, July 10, at noon.
