The Search is On for …
… a friend for Lady, the lonely little mini-mare.
Lady, sadly, is the only mini-horse (or barn critter) we have left, as her family expired some time ago. She and Smoky, the (adorable) little burro, shared the barn and seemed to get along OK. They each had their own barn space, separated by a cattle panel, and each had their own privacy pen, also separated by cattle panels down the center.
Although both were considered to be “mini,” they were not the tiny ones, and they were both about the same size,
We had been led to believe that Smoky might mistreat Lady, thus the separating panels. Smoky was really very gentle, but we didn’t want to take a chance on Lady being hurt, or even scared.
There was one incident, however, that proved the belief to be unfounded … at least in Smoky’s case.
All who knew Smoky knew that he hated getting wet, by snow or rain. When the first flakes or drops fell, he headed for his barn.
Lady had, somehow, got through the fence over into Smoky’s side. As they seemed to be getting along in the pen, we did not immediately separate them, but that meant that Lady was also sharing Smoky’s side of the barn, along with his pen.
One morning, it began raining and looking out my kitchen window, I was surprised to see little Smoky standing out in the rain, giving Lady all of the space in the barn. We never knew if she ran him out or if he, being the sweet little gentleman that he was, let her have the barn.
We lost Smoky this past year and we miss him so much. We think Lady misses him too, so we are looking for a little girl burro to keep her company.
Thus the Search Has Begun
We visited the Mulberry Grove area following leads to a little girl burro last week in search of  a friend for Lady, which proved to be enjoyable as Bill met up with some of his old Mulberry High schoolmates.
We visited with the Jerry Stines. At certain times of the year, Jerry bears an amazing resemblance to Santa Claus. We also visited the Steiners and wound up following a lead that took us to the pretty home of Forrest and Jeanette Brown, a double treat, as both of them had gone to Mulberry High School when Bill did, and Jeanette and I knew each other from working at the Fayette County Hospital at the same time.
So, the Search Continues
During our search, we saw several pretty horses and cute burros, but none for sale answered our need for a friend for Lady.
Of course, admittedly, little Smoky can’t be replaced, but we feel that a little girl donkey is someplace just waiting to come to the Homestead to be Lady’s friend. I already have a name for her and we will know when we find her.
