In the fall of 2010, the city of Vandalia received a $200,000 grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to locate and study properties that they believed could have possible petroleum contamination.
These particular properties are called “brownfields” and are properties whose redevelopment is hindered because of perceived or real contamination.
To date, five properties have been researched reviewing historical maps, property records and speaking, if possible, with former owners or their families, former neighboring properties, etc.
