Pool open 1-5 p.m. on Fourth of July

The Vandalia Swimming Pool will be open from 1-5 p.m. this Friday, the Fourth of July.

Take garage sales signs down after sales

A number of residents have asked that individuals who hold garage, rummage or yard sales take down their signs after the sales are over.
Signs that are left up after the sales confuse residents on who is actually holding sales on a particular weekend.
By law, residents are prohibited from posting any kind of sign on telephone poles.

Volunteers sought for Lincoln Festival

The second annual Lincoln Heritage Festival will be held next Saturday and Sunday in Vandalia's parks.
Organizer Sandra Leidner said volunteers are needed to assist with registration and to serve as hostesses. Those interested in helping with the festival may contact Leidner at 283-2176.
The festival will include an outdoor theater featuring scenes from Vandalia's early days; Civil War skirmishes at 6 p.m. on Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday; 1800s crafts and demonstrations, and a three-town 1800s baseball tournament; live bands; food vendors, carriage and pony rides; and children's activities.

FCH group's annual meeting is Tuesday

Friends & Families of Fayette County Hospital, the hospital's support group, will hold its annual meeting at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday in the hospital conference room.

Pet supplies accepted for library fines

In celebration of its summer reading program, “Paws to Read,” Evans Public Library will be accepting donations of pet supplies in place of fines or lost book charges.
The library will collect donations through Aug. 19. All items will be donated to Second Chance Animal Rescue.
For every item donated, $1 in fines or charges will be removed. New or gently used items accepted include blankets, rawhides, food bowls, treats, leashes and collars.

VPD tells of electricity bill scam

The Vandalia Police Department notified residents on Tuesday of a scam in which people are told that they are behind on their electricity bills and that their power will be shut off if payment is not made.
The VPD reports that a number of local residents have received such calls.
Ameren has stated in the past that it does not try to collect overdue bills over the phone.
