Bertrice Scribner, 90, Vandalia

Bertrice Scribner, 90, of Vandalia, died at 8:25 a.m. on Tuesday, May 25, 2010, at Brookstone Estates in Vandalia.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday at Mother of Dolors Catholic Church in Vandalia, with the Rev. Joseph Havrilka officiating. Burial will be in Union Cemetery in Ramsey. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday at Hohlt & File Funeral Home in Vandalia, with a prayer service at 6 p.m. Memorials: Mother of Dolors Catholic Church.

Mrs. Scribner was born on Oct. 22, 1919, in Loudon Township, Brownstown, the daughter of Frank and Maude Workman Springman. She married William “Bill” Scribner on June 19, 1940, in St. Charles, Mo.; he died on July 28, 2001.

She was a homemaker, and a member of Mother of Dolors Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters of America, Catholic Council of Women and Catholic Altar Society. She was a founding member of the Mid-Kaskaskia River Basin Coalition.

She is survived by daughters, Margaret Scribner Basak and her husband Leonard of Mokena, and Helen Meyer of Springfield; sons, Joseph Scribner of Vandalia, and Edward Scribner and his wife Barbara of Madisonville, Tenn.; sisters, Iris Hall of St. Louis, Mo., Madonna Schwarm of Loogootee and Phyllis McElheney of Metamora; brother, Frank Springman Jr. of St. Elmo; granddaughters, Tiffany Meyer of Chicago, Cassandra Basak of Mokena, Brittney Ray of Vandalia and Amanda Scribneer of Gainesville, Fla.; grandsons, Joshua Meyer of Springfield, L. Phillip Basak III of Mokena, Travis Scribner of St. Louis, Mo., and Jacque Scribner of Gainesville, Fla.; and great-grandchildren, Connor Ray and Parker Ray, both of Vandalia.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Thurman Springman and George Springman; and sisters, Madge Brown and Mildred Goldsboro.
