VANDALIA – Peyton Banal achieved a rare feat during the Vandalia softball alumni round-robin on Tuesday.
Banal, playing for the alumni team sponsored by Dr. Kevin Childers, struck out four batters in the first inning of a 19-1 win against the high school team and had 12 strikeouts in the four-inning contest.
Her team would go on to beat the alumni team sponsored by Liberty Trading, 8-4, in the final game of the night to win the round-robin. Liberty Trading lost to the Lady Vandals, 8-6.
Banal nearly had a chance to get five strikeouts in the first inning.
Jessica Sullens struck out in the first at-bat of the inning, but she reached first base when the catcher couldn’t handle the pitch, and the same happened in the next at-bat. Kylie Sellers, however, was out of the base line and called out.
Sullens would later score on an error, and Taylor Well and Kadi Metzger would both draw a walk, but they were stranded at second and third bases after two more strikeouts by Banal.
Banal, a Ramsey graduate who will be playing at St. Charles (Mo.) Community College, struck out three batters in the second, while surrendering the only hit of her outing to Molly Kern, and got two more in the third.
She struck out the side to end the game in the fourth.
Meanwhile, the alumni offense was scoring with regularity.
Amanda Walton and Whitney Schaal paced the offense with two hits, and Walton and Emilie Britt scored three times.
Schaal had three RBI, including a two-run single, and also stole a base.
