Atwood is MVP of men's slo-pitch league

The Vandalia men’s slo-pitch softball league will be holding the finals of its annual double-elimination league championship tournament on Thursday, starting at 6:30 p.m.

Seeding for that tournament, which started on Monday, was determined in a single-elimination tournament that was held last Thursday, and Buckstop Archery, the regular-season champs, earned the No. 1 seed.

One day before, the league handed out individual awards, with Justin Atwood bringing home most valuable player honors.

Other award winners included:

•Sportsmanship Award: Jon Keck
•Rookie of the Year: Nick Metzger

The league’s all-star team included the following players.

•Pitcher: Justin Atwood
•Catcher: Jordan Harmon
•First base: Marcus Smalls
•Second base: Ryan Thiele
•Third base: Cody Wimberly
•Shortstop: Dallas Gray
•Outfield: Jon Lotz
•Outfield: Brent Bayles
•Outfield: Shane Depew
•Outfield: Greg Mitchell
•Extra player: Jon Hawthorne
•DH (right-handed): Kenny Koenig
•DH (left-handed): Steve Hosick
•Extra-hitter (right): Andy Hipsher
•Extra-hitter (left): Joey Eddy

In the single-elimination tournament, Buckstop won the title by defeating Copper Penny, 26-0.

Justin Atwood and Koenig both homered during the game, and Koenig had two doubles, Mitchell tripled and Harmon doubled.

Harmon was the tournament most valuable player.
