VANDALIA

The junior high boys basketball team split a pair of close games against Hillsboro last Thursday.

The eighth-graders earned a 61-55 victory in double-overtime for their 11th win of the season.

Marcus Zimmerman’s 24 points paced the Jr. Vandals (11-4), who also got 18 points from Nathan Casey and 10 from Garrett McNary.

The seventh-graders lost, 51-45, to fall to 7-8.

Blake Barth led the team with 14 points, and Caleb Slater added 11.

At Greenville last Tuesday, the Jr. Vandals fell in both games.

The seventh-graders got a 3-pointer from Bryce Dunn as time expired in regulation to force overtime, but would fall 60-51.

Dunn’s shot was one of five points Vandalia (7-7) scored in the final five seconds. Trevor Small scored a second-chance basket with 2.1 seconds left, and Greenville committed a turnover on the inbounds pass.

Smalls had 18 points to lead the team, and Blake Barth had 17. Dunn added 15.

The eighth-graders struggled to make shots from the field in a 43-33 loss.

The Jr. Vandals (10-3) made just nine field goals in the game, but were 14-of-19 from the free-throw line.

Nathan Casey had nine points to lead the team, and James Taylor and Ethan Bayles each scored eight.

In the junior high volleyball opener last Tuesday, the eighth-graders took a 21-25, 26-24, 11-15 loss to Shelbyville.

PATOKA

The Warriors nearly made it five wins in a row last Saturday, but couldn’t find much offense in the fourth quarter as their lead slipped away in a 53-51 loss at Altamont.

Dylan Back made six 3-pointers to lead the game in scoring, with 18 points, and freshman Jered Cain added 10.

Back hit four of his long-range shots in the third period, helping Patoka to 24 points and a 45-40 lead, but the Warriors (10-5) managed just six points in the final eight minutes.

Altamont doubled them up in that period to earn the win. Garrett Ziegler scored 17 and Derek Jahraus followed, with 15.

ST. ELMO/BROWNSTOWN

The Eagles won their third overtime game of the season last Saturday, taking down Central A&M in the extra period.

The game was tied at 58 after regulation, and SEB outscored the Raiders, 8-6, in overtime to take the 66-64 win, giving the Eagles a 5-0 record in games decided by six or fewer points this season.

Seniors Jacob Behrends and Levi Maxey paced the offense with 16 points apiece, and sophomore Malachi Maxey was right behind, with 15.

SEB (9-7) took a 16-13 lead after the first period, but the offense slowed in the second quarter, allowing Central A&M a six-point advantage by halftime.

That margin grew to 10 by the end of the third period, but the Eagles used an 18-8 run over the final eight minutes to force overtime.

Trenton Chopan had 19 points for Central A&M to lead all scorers.

The Cougars took a lopsided National Trail Conference loss last Friday at Dieterich, falling 84-47.

Sophomore Brett Harmeier had 15 points to lead the Cougars (0-15, 0-4 NTC), and junior Evan Langley had 11.

Jake Bohnoff had 30 points to lead the Movin’ Maroons, and Tanner Traub added 21.

The Lady Cougars fell last Friday in a makeup game against Neoga.

South Central lost the National Trail Conference game, 67-20.

Freshman Abby Hahn had nine points to lead the Lady Cougars (0-14, 0-3 NTC), and sophomore Abby King had four.

Neoga did not score in the fourth quarter of the game, and its offense was led by Jillian Deters, who had 21 points.
